  1. (a) What does Innisfree stand for?
    Ans. Innisfree, a real island near Sligo, stands for W.B. Yeats a Utopia, or a fairyland into which he would like to escape from the hurly-burly of town life.
    b) What does the title, ‘The second Coming’ refer to?
    Ans. The first coming was the birth of Christ which heralded the Christian civilization, and the Second Coming refers to the coming of new destructive god and the reversal of Christian values.
    c) What does the falcon stand for in the poem “The Second Coming”? Ans. Falcon is a hawk trained to hunt small birds. In the poem The Second Coming, the falcon is used as a symbol of mankind or the intellect, science, technology, rationalism, etc.
    d) Who according to the poet, are the dying generations?
    Ans. The dying generations, according to the poet, consist of the young men and women, all the creatures, ‘fish, flesh or fowl’ in the fullness of their powers, are engaged in the sensual and sexual urge for procreation which is only a process ending in death.
    (e) Who is Prufrock?
    Ans. Prufrock is the protagonist in the poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. He represents the modern man suffering from indecision and lack of courage.
    (f) Who is Madame Sosostris?
    Ans. Madame Sosostris as referred to by Eliot in The Waste Land, is a fictitious fortune-teller who uses seventy-eight cards in telling the future of her clients.
    (g) What do you understand by ‘unreal city’?
    Ans. The phrase ‘unreal city’, taken from Baudelaire’s poem, refers to Paris which seems to merge with other unreal cities such as Eliot’s London or Dante’s city in the Inferno. The city is unreal because it is cut off from both natural and spiritual sources of life.
    (h) Who is the Fisher King?
    Ans. The Fisher King is a mythical figure in Miss Jessie Weston’s book From Ritual to Romance. The king because of his sinfulness became impotent and his land barren. The curse of aridity could only be removed by a quester, a youthful knight who must make a journey to the chapel of the Grail, submit to trial and ascertain the office of the Grail.
    (i) On what occasion was “Poem in October” written?
    Ans. Dylan Thomas wrote “Poem in October”, a wonderful lyric to celebrate his thirtieth birth anniversary.
    (j) How is the weather on the hill-top in the poem “Poem in October”? Ans. As the poet rode up the hill, towards the top, he found the weather hot there as in the summer season.
    (k) What is the theme of the poem ‘The Rival’?
    Ans. “The Rival” by Sylvia Plath deals with the theme of rivalry, conflict and animosity between husband and wife.
    (l) What is the poem, ‘Words’ about?
    Ans. The poem, ‘Words’ is about the act of writing.
