  1. (a) What is ‘touchstone’?
    Ans. Touchstone is an established standard or principle by which something is judged.
    (b) Who remarked that Chaucer’s poetry had ‘gold dew drops of speech’?
    Ans. Chaucer’s successor John Lydgate remarked that Chaucer’s poetry had ‘gold dew drops of speech’. Matthew Arnold mentions it A Study of Poetry.
    (c) What is poetic diction?
    Ans. The choice, use and arrangements of words in a line of poetry by a poet.
    (d) Who was Stephen Gosson?
    Ans. Stephen Gosson was a Puritan Churchman in Kent, who wrote the pamphlet, The school of Abuse in 1579 denouncing poetry as immoral.
    (e) To whom does Sidney compare the haters of poetry?
    Ans. Sidney compares the poetry-haters to vipers who kill their parents just on birth and to the hedge-hogs who first drive away their shelterer.
    (f) What is hymn?
    Ans. Hymn is a song in praise of gods or heroes, expressing religious emotion.
    (g) What is catharsis?
    Ans. The term catharsis means purgation, or purification or clarification.
    (h) Why did Dr. Johnson write ‘The Preface to Shakespeare’?
    Ans. To introduce Shakespeare’s dramas edited by him in 1765 to the reader Johnson wrote this Preface.

    Ans. According to Dr. Johnson, Shakespeare is above all a poet of nature.
    (j) What type of critic is Dr. Johnson?
    Ans. Dr. Johnson is a neo-classical critic and at the same time he modifies some of the important principles of neo-classicism which, in the long run, results in the introduction of romantic criticism.
    (k) What is “Lyrical Ballads”?
    Ans. Lyrical Ballads is a collection of poems written by Wordsworth and Coleridge jointly in a kind of style opposed to the contemporary taste and manners.

    Ans. Fancy is that faculty of human mind which does not create anything but arbitrarily brings images together retaining their individual existence to be attractive.
